A SINFUL SILHOUETTE
Astrophe chats to Antonia Pantazis, director & maker of Kick in the Eye, solid sterling silver jewellery made with love, lust & desire captured on 35mm film by Renee Leah at VAMFFs Silhouette.
What does 'Lust & Desire' mean to you?
Lust and desire to me reflect the ideas of passion and longing ~ two factors that back most things I make. I feel like the best things created are under the influence of being consumed by what you do - just like the feeling of having a crush. Then once you act on/ explore it you figure out if it’s something that could turn into love or if it fades. The idea of longing in a creative sense is that things rarely feel completely content, and in the back of my mind I’m in a state of thinking a few steps ahead to future moments of where I can go with ideas.
What is your favorite piece and why?
The *double cuffs* because they stand out as an unmistakable kick in the eye piece + they’re fun to wear and make your hands feel sturdy and tough + I like the look of stacking rings around around them too.
Most effective way you have found to express yourself?
Coming from a fine art background I never really found a medium to capture what I wanted to properly, and the progression into my love of fashion has proven to be much more of an outlet. An outfit either makes or breaks a mood and reflects an individuals personality and influences ~ that’s why I love making jewellery and having it sit in the realm of style and people choosing how to subtly or not decorate & express themselves. I feel more powerful and like the best version of myself with my hands decked out in layers of rings.
Do you have a self care routine to get yourself out of creative block/anxiety or self doubt?
When I’m in a rut I reach out to others who I have or want to work with and discuss collaborative visions we can bring to life [[just like I previously have with photographer Renee Leah & stylist/model Candy Brat with our feature Dream within a Dream.]] I find it really helps to be re-inspired by other creative minds, and it motivates me to make new pieces and work towards projects where the jewellery can be used for a separate purpose other than income, which I value so much more.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Grimes and Black Marble.
What change do you hope to see in the world in the next 5 years?
I hope to see more people ditching fast fashion!! And for there to be less competitiveness & more support amongst individuals in the creative scenes.
