Astrophe had a very candid chat with BERWYN about his mix tape TAPE 2/FOMALHAUT released today, this mixtape is an honest, stripped back reflection of hardship and resilience, through silky vocals and witty bars. he is one to watch. Read below for more:

Your 2021 Mixtape expresses themes of strength, grounding, depression and isolation, was it a cathartic process for you writing about these emotions? Did you have any ‘full circle moments’ in realising personal growth through the process at all?

A wise rapper once said "The truth don't rhyme"

How do you practice resilience in a digital age?

I am not really a technological guy, I only go on my phone to answer calls, I find time to read books or explore London.

Do you find more people being part of the creative process that it’s harder in that way to connect emotionally?

Not really, I have a lot of creative people around me so it keeps the creative juices flowing.

When you listen to your own music, how do you hear it? Do you take a break between recording and listening to it so you can hear it with a “clean ear”, or do you have another technique to mediate that over-familiarity with your own work

I mainly record my music in my kitchen and my studio, I record in sections a couple times, once that's down I listen to each take and decide which one sounds better.

BERWYN - TO BE LOVED | A COLORS SHOW

What kind of music or other art influenced you as a child and as a teenager? Have your influences changed much since then?

My dad played all his vinyls back home in Trinidad, he used to listen to all the oldies and as a teenager I was heavily influenced by Hip-Hop, RnB & Soul.

Where do you feel most comfortable and creative?

Anywhere really I'm just a creative guy

Do you have a particular direction you see yourself taking your music, or is it something that evolves naturally as you create, not something within your conscious control?

I do what the fuck I want, when I want and I'm having fun whilst doing it

Are there any projects or shows lined up that you are particularly excited about?

I'm performing in Ireland on my birthday which will be pretty cool

Are there any women in the industry (right now or previously) that you are inspired by?

I'm heavily influenced by a lot of soul singers and rappers, too many to mention

Lastly, do you have any advice for young musicians on a similar path to you?

Keep going, life hits hard just make sure you hit back harder and don't don't don't don't don't ever give up
