STEVE LACY ~ GEMINI RIGHTS
At age 24 Steve Lacy’s new album ‘Gemini Rights’ displays a sense of dynamism that is in no danger of slowing down. After an already prolific career of collaboration with band The Internet, and musicians like Kendrick Lamar, Tyler The Creator, Thundercat and Solange, his new album ‘Gemini Rights’ is for the majority written, played and produced by Steve himself.
Like most great albums ‘Gemini Rights’ flaunts the flirt, relationship, and break up cycle of love, but this time, the notion of romanticism is fragmented and constantly fluctuating. Much like a typical Gemini. Described as an external reflection of his personality in dealing with the mess of love, the language is honest and explicit, “said I love you never meant it, you was handsome, with a heavy dick, a cannon”. Gender fluid allusion and almost manic emotional switches could also cleverly translate to Lacy’s relationship with music and his audience, “do you even really like this track, take away the drugs would you feel the noise”.
“ Lacy’s signature of technical flair
is present in the ease at which he
can switch between elements in a song,
draping the album with a feeling of
fluidity amongst chaos. “
Lacy’s signature of technical flair is present in the ease at which he can switch between elements in a song, draping the album with a feeling of fluidity amongst chaos. ‘Sunshine’ pairs Steve and Fousheé in a perfect duo of angelic vocals and harmonies over a steady and easy percussion. Lacy’s beautiful guitar tones backgrounding the track create a seemingly simple sonic plumpness and a very satisfying listen.
‘Gemini Rights’ has definitely progressed beyond Steve Lacey’s historically lo-fi sound, maintaining the texture he is known for on an elevated level. This album delivers exactly what it says, “you think i’m two faced, i can name 23”.
