Chronicles from the future of Burberry

Daniel Lee debuted an impressive first collection for Burberry by paying homage to the brand’s history and providing us with a glimpse into its future. The Autumn/Winter 2023 collection is eminently wearable, with oversized trench coats, faux fur trimmed lapels and perfectly crafted hot water bottle covers, showcasing Lee’s ability to merge elegance, comfort and streetwear in his designs.

The rubber rain boots and signature square shaped shoes which could pass for commando boots, are staples throughout this collection and may also be a salute to the brand’s history of designing durable clothing for the British Military. The pairing of these boots with some of the more feminine silhouettes creates a welcomed juxtaposition and is reminiscent of the stylings of 1970s rock muses. Furthermore, the outdoor aesthetic and functionality that Burberry is known for is evident in the utilitarian satchels and saddle bags which come in a variety of sturdy colours and fabrics.

The new Chief Creative Officer breathes new life into Burberry’s classic tartan and check with the use of bold colours and textures to modernise and enliven the brand’s unmistakable signature. Bursts of blue appear in knits, coats and tailoring, referencing the fashion house’s recent rebrand, which has seen the return of the Equestrian Knight Design logo in a striking blue. The legacy logo which features the Latin word “Prorsum” meaning forwards, is a concept that is further explored through Lee’s design of graphic tees, which include slogans referencing change and growth. Although there are many references to the fashion house’s history, Lee acknowledges the significance of streetwear and its influence in high fashion, with the design of bold bomber jackets, looser fitting silhouettes and amplified sneakers.

It will be exciting to see how Lee continues to pull inspiration from Burberry’s history whilst taking the brand forward or should I say while taking the brand “Prorsum”?
